Money. Finance. When you read those words, how do they make you feel? How about if I say you need to look at your current account? Have you received an annual review of your credit card spending where it highlighted where you spent the most of your money? Does this create an emotional or even a physical reaction? If it does, you are not alone and shows that money is not always about the numbers.

Research shows that for many people, money is not just a tool, it’s emotionally charged. This isn’t surprising given everyone’s experiences of money are so different. The perceptions we have with money are dependent upon so many factors, not just our income.

Everyone has a different starting point in life and growing up we may have been told different myths which impacts our relationship with money. Evidence shows that our money beliefs develop in childhood, maybe even as young as seven years old. It is thought that unconsciously these money scripts are often passed down between generations. These beliefs are significant because they can inform our attitudes, behaviours and our future.

So what does money mean to you? Power? Security? Freedom? Love? Scarcity? Something else? Do you have hidden money habits?

Being aware of your attitude and financial habits is the first step to understanding your relationship with money before or alongside a financial planner or advisor. Having an awareness on what matters to you enables you to make choices that align with your values and motivation. Research shows that aligning your intentions with your values creates habits that are more likely to be successful. This is powerful as it can help you to overcome challenges you may be facing.

Finances can feel overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be that way. Coaching brings clarity and gives you confidence to give you and your money purpose.
