If you find dealing with money and planning your finances overwhelming, you’re not alone. In 2024, the FCA financial lives survey reported that 22% (or almost 12 million people) feel that way.

But what if I told you that there are some simple steps to start feeling more in control of your finances and feel better with money?  Here are five ways to financial wellbeing:

  1. Connect - engage with your finances rather than ignore it and talk to people that you care about so that you can share any worries, make plans and prioritise together.

  2. Take notice - Look at where your money is going and how each expense makes you feel. Reflect on what went well over the last month and what you can learn from it. This is not about feeling guilty- it’s a learning process!

  3. Be active - make it a habit to focus on a goal or intention and track your progress.

  4. Give - support others, whether that’s through sharing, donating to charity, supporting local businesses, or volunteering your time and skills. Financial wellbeing is not just about money!

  5. Keep learning and refining your skills - financial services is a very complex landscape, and products and services change regularly. We can’t be expected to know everything but taking an interest and seeking support where you feel you need it is a powerful step to acknowledging that you are taking control and doing your best.

These steps aim to help you to:

  • take control of your finances, rather than feel that it is controlling you,

  • build your sense of financial wellbeing by having enough money for everyday needs (housing, bills, food, etc.),

  • having savings to act as a cushion if you have an unexpected expense, such as if your washing machine breaks down and you need to replace it, or if you were to lose your job, and

  • plan for your future and your loved ones (pension, investments, will).

Taking control can help you begin to feel calm and confident with your money.
